Phat Brass in concert with youth orchestras

The Johannesburg Youth Orchestra Company will be presenting its annual “Metamorphosis” concert at the Eco Lodge & Spa, Thaba Ya Batswana, on Sunday 18 October.

The concert promises to be an exciting fusion of classical and contemporary jazz music featuring the well-known smooth crooner, Harry Talas, along with Phat Brass led by John Davies, and musicians from the Johannesburg Youth Orchestras.

The repertoire will include special arrangements by John Davies as well as jazz, modern movie music and classical repertoire. Arrive at 12h00 to relax at the Flower and Landscaping Show, then on to the concert at 15h00 to enjoy wine, savoury and sweet snacks while listening to the sweet music.

Phat Brass comes out of the great tradition of big bands, but goes one step further. Whereas a typical rehearsal band would simply churn out ‘In the Mood; and ‘Four Brother’, Phat Brass has its own repertoire, furnished by John Davies writing in a most unique style. The mix of classical and straight-ahead jazz idioms sets the band up and gives it identity. Harry and Phat Brass have produced a stunning album called ‘Stolen Moments’.

Tickets are available for R250 per person by calling the Johannesburg Youth Orchestra offices on 011 484 1257. Proceeds from the ticket sales will go towards subsidised music training for needy children.

The Johannesburg Youth Orchestra Company is a non-profit music organisation and is directly responsible for providing a musical home to more than 1 000 children and youth from Gauteng. It is the aim of the company to sustain instrumental music tuition in all its forms for the youth of South Africa.

Our six main youth orchestras for youth and young adults are: The Johannesburg Youth Orchestra, the Symphonic Wind Band, the Jazz Youth Orchestra, the Foundation Orchestra, Chamber Winds and Chamber Strings. We also train beginners on all orchestral instruments.

The Thaba Ya Batswana Eco Lodge is a rare and valuable jewel surrounded by the southern Johannesburg metropolis, which captures the spirit of the African renaissance. It is situated in the Klipriversberg Nature Reserve area and has an abundance of indigenous trees, plants, birds and wildlife.

The Tswana name meaning “Mountain of the Tswana People” is an apt description due to the discovery of Tswana settlement ruins that date back between 300 and 600 years. The historic remnants of the Tswana people are scattered throughout the eco lodge where visitors are able to observe it from many of the paths and trails.
