The Jonny Cooper Big Band`s Swing Safari concert set for Aardklop

The much anticipated `Swing Safari` concert to be performed by the legendary Jonny Cooper Big Band at Aardklop in October. The Jonny Cooper Big Band

On Saturday October 4th 2008 at 8pm, festivalgoers at the annual Aardklop Festival in Potchefstroom can ready themselves for the Jonny Cooper Big Band’s `Swing Safari` concert under the baton of Jonny Cooper himself, with direction by Maralin Vanrenen. The event will capture the nostalgia and unique energy of the Big Band era that has enjoyed renewed popularity since the release of swing hits recorded by stars such as Robbie Williams, Michael Buble and Harry Connick Junior.

In `Swing Safari`, the Jonny Cooper Big Band move away from the stereotypical ‘American Songbook’ and rework some of South Africa’s best-known songs into the 1940’s swing style, performed by some of our best artists and paying tribute to the finest composers and songwriters of that era. Patrons can look forward to hits such as Nico Carsten’s world hit `Zambezi`, Danie Bosman’s `Net ’n Stille Uurtjie` and `In die Skadu van Ou Tafelberg`, Jan Pohl’s `Sawends`, as well as songs like `Mama Thembu’s Wedding`, `Meadowland`, `Suikerbossie` and the `Penny Whistle` Song.

Earlier this year, the world-renowned Jonny Cooper Orchestra was awarded the prestigious Big Band Hall of Fame Award that recognizes and honours the orchestra for perpetuating, promoting and performing with integrity the sounds of the Big Band Era.

Maralin Vanrenen’s directorial career spans twenty-eight years and includes top productions such as Cats and Chicago. A fantastic combination of top South African soloists and groups will perform in `Swing Safari` with the Jonny Cooper Big Band - Brandon October, Gloria Bosman, Timothy Moloi, Jolette Odendaal, Anna Davel, Louis Loock, the Afrika Mamas and Cutt Glas.

Brandon October became known as the runner-up in South Africa’s very first Idols competition. Today he is one of our country’s most loved, versatile and energetic artists. Gloria Bosman is probably one of our most exciting artists and has already performed with a number of South African icons. She is also known for her performances with Coenie de Villiers and most recently with Zanne Stapelberg in `Divas on a String` featuring DNA Strings.

Timothy Moloi studied at the Ohio Wesleyan University in the USA and was seen in the Barnyard Theatre production, His Way: a Tribute to Frank Sinatra. He regularly performs with the Jonny Cooper Big Band. Jolette Odendaal made her professional debut as a member of the A Capella group Cutt Glas. She also performed on the box office hit Big Band Blast in 2003 and is currently focusing on her solo career.

Former Cutt Glas member Anna Davel is a Jazz crooner of note and has established herself as an artist, singer and lyricist. She won the ATKV Crescendo competition in 1997 and also boasts a SAMA music award. Louis Loock hails from Stellenbosch and is one of South Africa’s most promising tenors. He regularly performs at corporate functions, festivals and other events and is currently focusing on his solo career as well as his career as member of the brand new group Romanz.

The Afrika Mamas are mostly known for their performances with Dozi and Jannie Moolman. Their involvement with Swing Safari will bring out the truly unique South African rhythms and sound in a pure and genuine manner without pretence. Completing the performer line-up will be the female A Capella group Cutt Glas who will be celebrating their 20th year together next year and who need no introduction our audiences. Their latest CD, `Vlymskerp` will also be launched at Aardklop this year.

The `Swing Safari` cd, with musical arrangement by Andrew Ford, will be available when the Swing Safari concert premières their once-off show in Cape Town at the Grand Arena at GrandWest on the 27th November 2008. Watch the press for details.

In true Big Band style, `Swing Safari` has been made possible by Huisgenoot and MiWay and Mango Airlines is sponsoring the flights of the orchestra to Aardklop.
