Cape Town City Ballet presents its Sunday Night Summer Season of `Giselle`
The Cape Town City Ballet will present Giselle, regarded by many as the ultimate classical ballet at Maynardville Open-air Theatre on Sundays only during January and February 2008.
For more than a century, since its premier in 1841 in Paris, this two act romantic ballet has enjoyed huge success and has become one of the best loved ballets of all time. Sometimes known as the Hamlet of dance, Giselle highlights the ballerina as a dancer and actress. The story is simple, but beautifully told.
In the first act, a young, innocent village maiden named Giselle falls in love with Albrecht, a nobleman disguised as a peasant who is betrothed to Bathilda, daughter of the Duke. When Giselle discovers the deceit, she is inconsolable and goes mad and then dies of a broken heart. In the second act, she becomes one of the Wilis, spirits of young girls who die before their wedding day. Myrtha, the Queen of the Wilis forces Albrecht to dance again and again, but Giselle intervenes long enough for him to survive until dawn. At sunrise the Wilis must return to their graves. Giselle must return too, but not before showing Albrecht that she forgives him for his treachery. The two pledge their love to each other and she descends back into her grave. Marianne Bauer opens the season on Sunday 20 January with Emmerich Schmollgruber who debut`s in the role of Albrecht. Queen of the Wilis will be Angela Hansford with Mervyn Williams as Hilarion. The casting for Sunday 27 January will be Megan Swart as Giselle and Brock Hayhoe as Albrecht with Janine Laidlow in the role of Queen of the Wilis and Grant Swift will be Hilarion. All making their debut in these roles.
Tickets are R65 - R85 and can be bought through Computicket or Artscape Dial-a-seat on 021 421 7695.
