The hit Broadway musical, Legally Blonde, will make its South African debut at the Breytenbach Theatre later this month.

The musical will be staged by the Tshwane University of Technology’s Department of Performing Arts (Musical Theatre) in association with the Dramatic, Artistic and Literary Rights Organisation (DALRO).

Based on the novel by Amanda Brown and the hit song with the same name, Legally Blonde tells the story of Elle Woods, a sorority girl who enrols at Harvard Law School to win back her ex-boyfriend, Warner. She discovers how her knowledge of the law can help others, and successfully defends exercise queen Brooke Wyndham in a murder trial.

Hit songs with their popular lyrics, like Bend and Snap, Omigod You Guys, Whipped into Shape, Gay or European, are just a few of the catchy tunes that will captivate the audience.

Prof Ndwamato George Mugovhani, Head of the Department of Performing Arts, is the producer of the show. Rostislava Pashkevitch, coordinator of the TUT Musical Theatre programme and award-winning composer and performer, is the director and musical director of the show. Sidney Agnew, a lecturer at the Department, is the assistant director and choreographer. Singing coaches Jolanda Becker and Marina Botha fine-tune the intricate musical arrangements.

This technical giant is masterfully recreated by the Breytenbach Theatre team and the Department of Entertainment Technology. Students of the Music programme at the Department of Performing Arts will bring the magic of live music to the audience.

Performances are as follows: Thursday 25 April, until Saturday 4 May with curtain rising at 19:30 on weekdays and Saturday evenings, and at 15:00 on Saturday 27 April and Saturday 4 May; the only matinee performances of the run.
