Market Theatre Thursday play readingsMarket Theatre Foundation09/12/2012 15:25:01
Craig Higginson, the Market Theatre’s Literary Manager and Dramaturg, will be running readings at the Market Theatre on the last Thursday every month. The readings are an opportunity for playwrights to have their plays heard, with an opportunity for feedback. While no promises of production can be made at the outset, the intention is to facilitate dialogue between the Market Theatre and playwrights – with a view to developing working relationships. Writers often work in isolation and it is believed that open readings – which aim to be as honest as they are constructive – may help to further nurture an environment for playwrighting. The readings must be organised by the writer. S/he will need to gather a group of performers, provide their own copies of the script and bring any basic equipment they might need. They are also free to invite a small audience. Attendance is free. The Market Theatre will be providing the space and the presence of at least one member of the Artistic Team. Craig Higginson will be present at each of the sessions – unless he is out of town at the time – and Malcolm Purkey and others from the Market staff will also attend whenever possible. The Market Theatre aims to nurture theatre practitioners for the future, making work that challenges in both form and content and is also socially engaged. In an emerging democracy, it is essential that we nurture an environment in which a diverse range of voices can grow. We hope this initiative will go some way in helping to achieve this.
