James Grace in concert at Plaisir de MerleDistell
Leading classical guitarist, James Grace will perform his favourite works at an intimate recital at Plaisir de Merle in the Cape on September 16 at 17h00.
Grace promises patrons a diverse and interesting programme with a variety of different musical styles and sounds. Aside from performing a selection of works from his Spanish and Latin albums, he will be debuting some new arrangements of various Beatles songs.
A sought-after concert artist who has appeared as a soloist with South Africa’s major orchestras, Grace started guitar lessons at the age of seven and had a natural affinity for the instrument. He believes part of the guitar’s charm is in the intimate connection between the instrument and the player.
“The classical guitar is the only instrument you actually hold against you when you play it. You can feel how it vibrates and resonates when you strike its stings, and you do so with the direct contact with the flesh of your fingers,” says Grace.
Grace completed his studies at the Royal College of Music in London and upon graduation became the first guitarist in the College’s history to be awarded the Tagore Gold Medal, an annual award presented to the most outstanding student. After spending two years in Doha, in the Arabian State of Qatar teaching at an International Music Centre, he returned to South Africa to become Head of Classical Guitar Studies at the University of Cape Town.
Passionate about nurturing South African musical talent, Grace established and manages the record label, Stringwise Records. Through his label, he has given many local classical and jazz musicians the opportunity to record and market their music. He is currently establishing the Stringwise Young Artist’s Trust which will help young South African artists to produce their own albums and will also finance bursaries for overseas study.
Grace’s fans will be delighted to hear that he is planning to record his sixth album towards the end of the year and will be able to find out details about this album, as well as other forthcoming appearances, at www.jamesgrace.co.za
