Rosemarie Marriott at Dawid's Choice GalleryArt Source South Africa
Rosemarie Marriott’s exhibition and publication launch on 1 September 2012 at Dawid’s Choice Gallery, Sandton.
This Spring Day exhibition will showcase a selection of Rosemarie Marriott’s earlier and new artworks. This exhibition provides examples of the artist’s innovative oeuvre, and has works were created during the period 2008 – 2012. The artworks on this exhibition have been selected by curators Dawid Ras and Les Cohn and will showcase several significant works by this challenging contemporary artist.
Marriott has held several successful solo exhibitions at galleries in Johannesburg over recent years such as Geslag, Genus, and Wolhaarstories. They have cemented her reputation as a contemporary South African artist whose work is multi-layered and rich in content – an artist who pushes the boundaries of her material. The materials she employs are often unusual such as animal hides, antelope parts and bones. In her drawings and linocuts, she engages viscerally with the surface of the paper she uses. However, in the exquisite new series of etchings geȅin exhibited on this show for the first time, the imagery is sensitive, delicate and poignant.
Recently her work culminated in a solo exhibition tour titled relaas …which was selected for the Main Programme of the 2012 Grahamstown National Arts Festival. This accolade was followed by a year and a half long tour of the work to several museums around South Africa during 2010 and 2011, where it reached a wide and appreciative audience.
The exhibition is also the occasion where her new publication also titled relaas…will be launched. Published under an imprint of Art Source South Africa Publishing, this book will be available for sale at the gallery and at the opening the artist will be available to sign copies.
Marriott obtained a degree from UNISA and later completed a fine art diploma at the Wits School of the Arts (WSOA), where she studied as a ‘mature’ student. Previously she’d studied art informally for a number of years. Since 1986 Marriott has held several successful solo exhibitions (including one in Lusaka, Zambia in 1995). She has also participated in many group shows at major galleries together with other well established artists. Her work has been well received critically wherever she has exhibited.
The exhibition opens 1 September at 15h00 at Dawid’s Choice Gallery, 18 Silvela Road, Sandown Estate, Sandton, Johannesburg.
