Tomorrow, Sunday 5 August, Cape Town musos will celebrate Nelson Mandela at a special event in Muizenberg.

On Sunday 5 August, members of the Cape Town music industry will come together to honour of the 94th birthday of Nelson Mandela and mark the 50th Anniversary of his capture and arrest.

Natalia Da Rocha the CEO of Applauz Arts Initiative, has sourced a group of some 30 community based singers and musicians currently involved in a project - to mark the occasion of this historic anniversary. A song was composed and recorded by Kurt Egelhof and will be launched at the event. The launch will include the live performance of the song by the group of singers and musicians, as well a the release of a CD and DVD, for the media and related parties.

Kurt Egelhof, who along with Natalia Da Rocha - the initiator of this event - decided to write and record a tribute to Nelson Mandela on the auspicious occasion of his 94th birthday. they invited participation to every South African performer and entertainer, of all race, creed, genre, age and language - from across the entire country - who were willing and able to participate, to make their way to ‘F Sharp Studios’ in Cape Town, on Sunday 29th July 2012, to record the song entitled ‘These Hands’. Egelhof has produced and directed Isidingo, Generations, Backstage and Scandal at some point in his life.

The song is dedicated to Nelson Mandela, and all the Fathers and Mothers in our land, whose hands have helped shape our present from a dismal evil past; elders who, through their dehumanising exposure to apartheid, have possibly lost sight of the original vision they once held sacrosanct; people who still dream, way into their old age, that their sons, and the sons of their sons, will one day bring truth, justice, freedom and dignity back to our beautiful land, our beautiful people.

There will be no fees associated with the project – all content and creativity will be donated freely by willing participants. And any pursuing royalties from the airplay and sale of the song will be entirely donated to a fund that sets out to restore financial dignity to musicians who have been impoverished by the current status quo of our exploitive music industry. All the musicians and singers from across the Cape Flats, who participated in the recording, will be present at the launch.

Applauz Arts Initiative is an NGO whose vision is ‘Social Upliftment through Arts and Culture’ has been active in the greater Western Cape for the past decade, giving performance opportunities to new talent, regardless of race class or creed.
