Delirium explores man-made boundariesMarket Theatre Foundation08/02/2012 08:50:05 The Market Theatre presents Delirium, written by Ariel Dorfman, directed by Greg Homann, starring David Dennis, Fiona Ramsay and Fezile Mpela . Season: 21 August - 20 September 2012 (Barney Simon Theatre) 22 - 23 September 2012 (Hilton Arts Festival) Chilean America human rights activist, Ariel Dorfman, is one of the world’s leading contemporary playwrights. His most famous play, Death and the Maiden, was made into a film in 1994 by Roman Polanski and starred Sigourney Weaver and Ben Kingsley. His latest play provides a pertinent and playful allegory for the ethnic and nationalist divisions we see across the world. These divides are acute in a country like post-apartheid South Africa, making a staging of Delirium an exciting opportunity to highlight the absurdity of man-made boundaries and borders. Delirium is set against the backdrop of invented lands at war. Although the play is largely in English, Dorfman has invented a new language which is integrated into dialogue. The three characters hang onto a series of delusions as a means of surviving the insane boundaries that have been created by State and family. When a new border line is drawn through the middle of the elderly couples’ house, dividing it into two countries, a series of farcical events unfold. The productions stellar cast is directed by Greg Homann, who recently won two Ovation Awards at this year's National Arts Festival (Brothers in Blood and One-Woman Farce) and whose five-man version of The Pirates of Penzance was nominated for nine Naledi Awards this year, winning three, including Best Cutting Edge Production. The world-premiere of the play will be presented in the Barney Simon Theatre over a five week period coinciding with the Mail & Guardian Johannesburg Literary Festival. The Festival comprises of literary and performance events including a pre-performance talk with Homann and the cast on Friday 31 August 2012. The season of Delirium will end with a tour to Hilton Arts Festival in KwaZulu- Natal on 22 and 23 September 2012.
