Athol Fugard's The Blue Iris extendsDIVA PR07/18/2012 15:28:49
Athol Fugard's tender play, The Blue Iris, has been extended at the beautiful Fugard Studio Theatre in District Six, Cape Town. After a sell-out world première at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown this year, Athol Fugard's The Blue Iris continues to play to great acclaim at the Fugard Studio Theatre. The Blue Iris forms part of the Fugard Theatre's celebration of Athol Fugard’s 80th birthday year. Earlier this year the powerful and moving production of Fugard’s 'Statements After An Arrest Under The Immorality Act' played to sold out houses and excellent reviews and the audience and critics' response to The Blue Iris has been equally impressive. Set in Athol Fugard’s beloved Karoo, this tender story revolves around the gradual disintegration of a marriage through misunderstanding, neglect and disappointment as told in the reminiscences and regrets of widower farmer Robert Hannay and the heart-wrenching sadness of his loyal farm worker and wife’s companion - Rieta. The Blue Iris dissects the pain of missed opportunity and emotional disconnection touching us all to the core. It is Athol Fugard at his most honest, gentle and introspective. What the critics have had to say about The Blue Iris: "Spell-binding story... " - Stein Du Toit, Cape Times “The Blue Iris is a consummate masterwork… a must-see play…” - Daniel Dercksen, Bizcommunity "Fugard triumphs!”; “Vintage Fugard”; “Achingly beautiful piece of theatre”; “Substantial, moving, satisfying theatre..." - Theresa Edelman, CUE “… Fugard’s genius shines…” Clifford Graham, Artslink.co.za "... teater van gehalte; ontroerende teatervervaring.” - Willem de Vries, Die Burger The Blue Iris is directed by Janice Honeyman and features Claire Berlein, Graham Weir and Lee-Ann van Rooi. Pusetso Tshibedi is the Assistant Director, with lighting design by Mannie Manim, set design by Dicky Longhurst and costume design by Birrie le Roux. The production is produced by Eric Abraham and the Fugard Theatre in association with Mannie Manim, and The National Arts Festival. The Blue Iris will extend for one week and must close on 4 August 2012 before transferring to The Market Theatre in Johannesburg where it will enjoy a season in the Laager Theatre from 21 August to 7 October 2012. Tickets for The Blue Iris playing at the Fugard Studio Theatre range from R110 to R140 and registered Friends of the Fugard members, scholars, learners, groups of 10 or more and pensioners benefit from excellent discounts. www.thefugard.com “We should be going into people’s lives, their souls, their ways of life.
