A selection of South African art is up for auction in Durban on July 22 together with a Swiss watch made during World War 1. David Unterslak, Consolidated Auction's Group KwaZulu-Natal Managing Member and the auctioneer for this auction said: "Our most recent art auction was a great success attracting a big crowd with some serious buyers. We have a whole new range of artworks just in from a signed limited edition hand-coloured print by Salvador Dali, titled Blue Unicorn, based on his original artwork, Happy Unicorn, to large scale gentle pastoral paintings by Gabriel de Jong, Errol Boyle and Michael Albertyn. We also have an artwork by Durban artist, Pascal Chandler, and an oil painting, a typical South African landscape, by De Jong’s grandson, Casey van der Leek.” Unterslak added that of particular interest on auction for collectors would be the wide range of Swiss watches. “We have a historical Elgin WW 1 Trench watch with a classic brown leather strap. It’s very elegant and can be used as a pocket watch and you can see the fantastic detail of the inner workings of the watch. There’s a 1962 18ct gold Omega constellation Pie-Pan Dial vintage watch and a 1960 Zenith mechanical 14ct gold filled watch up for auction, a stainless steel Cortebert sport watch and a gold plated Swiss Emperor watch," said Unterslak. Also on auction is a silk Qum, a range of valuable jewellery and a dramatic bronze sculpture by E. Drout of a Roman god capturing a jaguar. “A rather fascinating find is an ornately detailed John Blissett black powder pistol with the original black powder bag. Blissett made guns for HRH, the Duke of Sussex, so the gun is estimated to have been made in the early 19th century.” Coin collectors are in for a treat with a range of old South African currency from R1 coins dating back to 1966 and 3d coins dating back to 1934. There will also be R1, R2 and R5 notes and the RSA 1 Pound and 5 Pound notes and a range of collectable coins up for auction. The auction of artwork, jewellery and watches takes place on 22 July at 11am at Consolidated Auction Group, 90 Intersite Avenue, Umgeni Business Park, Durban.
