If media reports are to be believed, it will take a while for Grahamstown to recover from Sibongile Khumalo’s performance at the National Arts Festival. Her cross-country musical journey titled Reflect. Celebrate. Live: The University Tour is now going to Cape Town and then it will be Joburg’s turn to be mesmerised by this truly African celebration. The sold-out Reflect. Celebrate. Live: The University Tour hits Cape Town on Saturday, 14 July at 8pm at the Baxter Concert Hall, Main Road, Rondebosch, with a final performance in Joburg on 28 July at the Wits Great Hall, Wits University, Central Block, East Campus, Braamfontein. (The Johannesburg leg of the celebration will double up as a fundraiser for the Wits Student Representative Council’s Humanitarian Fund.) “Khumalo performed with panache and professionalism tempered through an exhortation of her inner core, and an unfailing humility,” raved Cue Online’s Jeffrey Brukman about the memorable performance. “This was evident in Grace and Mercy, a work that received a totally committed performance where Khumalo entered the inner sanctum of deep seated emotion. In the same brace of songs, Breath of Life was rendered with perfect diction; the work of an accomplished artist,” he added. The Momentum-sponsored Reflect. Celebrate. Live: The University Tour sees the multi award-winning performer and African music ambassador utilising the concerts to mentor 12 up-and-coming choristers who were chosen after a vigorous selection process. The talented choristers will not only benefit from the experience of performing live with the world-class mezzo-soprano: she will also impart her skills and knowledge to empower them beyond the concert. “If there is anything I have learnt from my father Khabi Mngoma, who was a professor of music, it is that education is a gift that can never be taken away from you, no matter what. That is the opportunity that I am presenting to these 12 choristers,” says the decorated vocalist. The choristers will be called upon when Khumalo delivers a number of breathtaking new tracks with the ensemble. The songstress will also be surrounded by the talents of James Ngcobo, who will fill the role of creative director for the performances, while Kutlwano Masote conducts the choir and Mdu Mtshali leads the jazz trio and acts as the repetiteur. The Standard Bank Young Artist of the Year for Music in 2010, Samson Diamond, will lead the string quartet as they support the angelic voice of Khumalo, whose costumes will be designed by the acclaimed designer Thando Lebese. “Reflect. Celebrate. Live is about the importance of harnessing the lessons of the past and living them now in order to continue my personal empowerment and learning. Once one has reflected on and celebrated one’s success, it is important to live the present and be significant in one’s endeavours. This tour is my way of moving from success to significance,” she asserts. With a stellar career that spans two decades, the illustrious Khumalo will invoke nostalgia when she takes to the campus and festival stages to reimagine her existing repertoire, including crowd favourites such as Painful Joy, Untold Story and Little Girl. Reflect. Celebrate. Live: The University Tour demonstrates Khumalo’s ongoing dedication to giving back to the nation and the people that have moulded her into an international role model. Even beyond the university tour, the music stalwart will continue to educate whoever comes into contact with her potentially life-changing music. Reflect. Celebrate. Live: The University Tour is the most highly anticipated Sibongile Khumalo tour to date and promises to deliver in the most spectacular way as the gifted singer takes audiences on a journey that explains who she was, who she is and what the future holds for her.
