Thought-provoking entertainment for the entire family at People’s Theatre in the Joburg Theatre Complex from 4 June to 5 August. Get the little ones ready for a charming piece of theatre which is all at once entertaining and educational. The unique concept behind The Gingerbread Man 2 not only allows for kids and adults, alike, to be enthralled by famous fantasy characters, but it also provides real life scenarios for children to identify with and ultimately learn from – audiences are motivated to participate and become involved in the story driven by the characters, their challenges and relatable problems, resulting in a meaningful interactive experience. The Gingerbread Man will woo audiences through song, dance and a magical story that plays out on top of a kitchen dresser. Meet lovable and colourful characters like Mrs Pepper and Mr Salt, the Old Tea Bag, Herr Von Cuckoo, Sleek the Mouse and of course the inimitable Gingerbread Man himself, in this witty story written by internationally renowned and critically acclaimed children’s playwright Sir David Wood. At midnight, instead of the clock striking its usual cuckoo song it is disaster which strikes instead when Herr Von Cuckoo loses his voice and, therefore, his ability to sing out cuckoo twelve times. It’s the Gingerbread Man who comes to the rescue as his bright ideas and courageous efforts help to save Herr Von Cuckoo from the dreaded Dustbin. And so it is that the vivacious characters atop the kitchen dresser come together to help a friend overcome a difficulty and learn a few lessons along the way, which is synonymous with the types of real life experiences that kids are faced with on a regular basis. The Gingerbread Man 2 relies on its talented cast and crew to bring the story to life and provides young audiences with a production they can invest their emotions in. Karabo Oberem , Ziya Devar and Joseph Joffe share the role of the Gingerbread Man, Alexandra and Isabella Snyman alternate in the role of Miss Pepper, Sean McGrath plays Mr Salt, Gavin Gomes plays Herr Von Cuckoo, Vishendra Singh plays Sleek the Mouse and Noni Mkhonto plays The Old Bag. All this takes place on a colourful set, a larger-than-life kitchen dresser designed by Marius Boshoff. Gorgeous costumes created by Linda Wilson are based on famous English cottageware and cornishware pottery kitchen ornaments. Musical direction is by Louis Zurnamer and the theatre production is directed by the celebrated team Jill Girard and Keith Smith. Essentially, The Gingerbread Man 2 will not only provide powerful entertainment for the whole family but will also educate young minds into a greater understanding, inspiring them to engage with the characters and become little problem solvers themselves.
