People’s Theatre celebrates over 21 years of top notch theatre productions!

This year the Peoples Theatre celebrates over 21 successful years of providing world-class quality entertainment. This successful production house has produced countless fun filled shows for children in Johannesburg ensuring that this high end entertainment is educational too, touching many families across South Africa.

To celebrate, the amazing team driving People’s Theatre, namely Jill Girard and Keith Smith have rounded up some top shows, some of which will be re-introduced in South Africa in a new format . Children are going to be enthralled by the likes of Disney’s Jungle Book Kid’s, The Gingerbread Man 2, Peter Rabbit and other Tales and The Little Mermaid.

“Our line up this year is all about providing variety for children and also, showing how wonderful, well-known children’s stories can be adapted to take on an all-new dimension when they are on stage. The interaction, the costumes, the song and dance ensure that the live experience becomes something magical that every child should experience not just once, but many times in their lives,” says Girard who believes that live theatre is a need , not a privilege.

The People’s Theatre caters to diverse audiences, the majority of whom are school children. Visiting school groups range from the affluent to township schools and all experience the same exceptionally high-level of production that The People’s Theatre commits itself to. Peoples Theatre provides an environment where children from diverse backgrounds can come together and discover the enjoyment of communication through drama and self-expression.


About this year’s productions:

Disney’s The Jungle Book Kids (5 March to 15 April 2012)

Come along on a journey with the adorable little boy Mowgli in Rudyard Kipling’s story, Disney’s The Jungle Book Kids. Meet all the unforgettable friends in this colourful production as they teach Mowgli valuable life lessons on his journey to the Man Village where he belongs. Exciting action, song and dance will enthral every child recreating lasting imagery that connects fantasy with reality.

The Gingerbread Man 2 (4 June to 2 August 2012)

Peoples Theatre has secured the rights for this world renowned musical play written by Sir David Wood especially for children. The Gingerbread Man 2 is set on a giant kitchen dresser. Come and meet Herr Von Cuckoo, Salt, Pepper, the Old Bag, Sleek the Mouse and the Gingerbread Man, in a show filled with exciting creative participation that will capture the imagination of the whole family.

Peter Rabbit and Other Tales (3 September to 1 October 2012)

This delightful interactive production of the classic tale by Beatrix Potter will have its young audience swept up in the magic that has endured over 100 years. This highly entertaining production has the accent on encouraging reading and a love of books.

The Little Mermaid (5 November to 23 December 2012)

This exciting all new production takes place in the magical underwater kingdom of that beautiful young mermaid Ariel ………She longs to leave behind this wet wonderland to marry a human prince. Based on Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytale, this production is fantastic family entertainment aimed specifically at children. Jill Girard and Keith Smith direct this all-time classic bringing to life these best loved characters on a spectacular set and impressive costumes that capture the mystery of the ocean.

The success of this production is its suspense, infectious sense of humour combined with comedy, song and dance. A definite all time holiday show for the whole family.

Situated in the Joburg Theatre Complex (formally the Johannesburg Civic Theatre, this purposely created Children's Theatre is South Africa's flagship theatre for young people, staging over 8 productions per year.

Schools and The People’s Theatre

Our research has shown that 80% of children, who attend our shows on a school outing, would never normally be exposed to the theatre. Our relationship with schools is therefore of supreme importance as theatre is an education in itself and our discounted prices make this opportunity accessible to all.

We reach children from all areas, from the affluent private schools, to township and farm schools. Our range of productions caters for children from preschool to adults.

The Kids’ Club

Children who join the Kids’ Club for just R80 a year receive preferential rates on tickets and also get to enjoy free entrance to a show that falls closest to their birthday. They will receive fun newsletters and will also stand to win prizes in exciting competitions.


The people behind the scenes at People’s Theatre

KEITH SMITH

South Africa has seen him in the theatre, on television and film.

He has had a dynamic dose of every variable that exists in the entertainment industry and is a director of Peoples Theatre with its home base at the Civic Theatre, Johannesburg, South Africa. His dancing career stemmed from his love of ice skating and he was selected to skate in the Junior World Olympics.

He won the SABC/ATKV Best Male Vocalist award in 1977. His professional career started with Brickhill Burke at His Majesty’s Theatre with the Production of They’re Playing Our Song and Hello Dolly. His passion for singing and dancing got him to Las Vegas in a show A Touch of Vegas as the lead male vocalist. On his return he soon became a familiar face throughout SA as co-host on a long running popular game show Telly-Fun-Quiz and presented several seasons of Your Own Business for the SABC. A Touch of Weber and a Taste of Rice took him from the Sound Stage to the United Arab Emirates and included a performance with Sir Tim Rice. He starred in Come to the Sun at Sun City for a record run of 18 months.

He played George Dillingham in Aspects of Love at the Joburg Theatre in 2010 and in 2011 had the privilege of performing with Marvin Hamlisch in a one off concert at the Sandton Convention Centre!

Keith continues to direct and stage countless productions at the Peoples Theatre.

JILL GIRARD

Jill only ever wanted to work in the theatre. As a child, she studied with the legendary Rita Maas, and started her professional career as a child actor in a production of Daddy Long Legs with Diane Todd and Bob Courtney. She completed her degree in Drama before going on to Drama School in London.

She performed in several plays in the UK, the highlights including the British Premieres of both Thornton Wilder and Tenessee Williams works, as well as the annual Shaw Festival at Ayot St. Lawrence, the home of Bernard Shaw and Kensington Arts Festivals. Jill has been privileged to have worked with some of the finest theatrical talents in the world, including Robert Henderson, Henzie Raeburn, Miranda Marshal, Peter Lindsay, George Margo and Edourd Greer.

Returning to Cape Town, Jill worked at the Space Theatre, Nico Malan and then met the acclaimed British actor Henry Goodman, who introduced her to the wonderful world of Children's Theatre when he cast her in productions of King Arthur and Beatrix Potter.

She has directed for both television and theatre but has always preferred live theatre, and together with Keith, they direct at least 8 productions per year. Jill was a finalist in 1988 in the Arts and Culture category of Woman of the Year.

Production highlights include The Wizard of Oz, Peter Pan, Winnie the Pooh, the centenary production of Peter Rabbit, Cinderella, The Magic of Walt Disney, Gingerbread Man, Babe and, (at Off Broadway), Absolutely Fabulously Broadway, My Way and Voila Moulin Rouge.
