Artscape preens its feathers for summer

The Artscape Theatre Centre is set to receive thousands of visitors over the holiday season. In the two weeks it offers two plays, two musicals and dance.

With some 14 productions ranging from an international smash hit musical to early-morning, open-air performances, all systems are running smoothly to present an unforgettable entertainment experience to all patrons.

Hol – 12 November to 2 December 2011 (± 1,25 hrs)

Acclaimed actress Nicola Hanekom explores the life of Liesbet Swanepoel, a woman who is trapped on a treadmill in a journey of the mind. The emptiness she feels within herself is something she can’t run away from. Where does one go without your shadow? Tickets range from R60 to R80 at the Arena.

Seashells – 17 November to 3 December 2011 (± 1,25 hrs)

In this quirky play by Rafiek Mammon, the audience meets Ella, performed by the much-admired actress, Anthea Thompson. She is an identical twin, with a collection of seashells and an even bigger collection of secrets. Off-beat humour mingles with the disturbing truths of family lives. Tickets range from R60 to R80 at the Arena.

The Phantom of the Opera – 22 November 2011 to 14 January 2012 (± 2,5 hrs)

Broadway’s longest running musical. This Andrew Lloyd Webber smash hit has experienced sell-out seasons around the world. Through clever staging techniques, the story of a disfigured musical genius known only as the Phantom, who haunts the depth of the Paris Opera House, magically unfolds on stage to mesmerise audiences. Tickets range from R125 to R425 at the Opera House.

Lost in the Stars – 24 to 27 November 2011 (± 2,25 hrs)

Shortly after the publication of Alan Paton’s, Cry, the Beloved Country, Kurt Weill and Maxwell Anderson set about adapting it into a musical for the Broadway stage. A host of outstanding South African singers delivering the great songs of Weill’s brooding score, including the classics Lost in the Stars, Trouble Man, Stay Well and Little Gray House. Tickets range from R100 to R150 at the Theatre.

Cape Dance Company – 30 November to 11 December 2011 (± 2 hrs)

One of South Africa’s top dance companies presents an outstanding repertoire of neo-classical ballets and it premiers a new work, When Dawn Comes… by the acclaimed US choreographer, Christopher L Huggins. This season also includes the re-staging of Mr Huggins’s Enemy Behind the Gates and Michelle Reid’s God’s Waiting Room. Tickets range from R100 to R160 at the Theatre.

Dreamcatcher – 3 to 10 December (± 2 hrs)
