The Artscape Theatre Centre highlights cancer at the annual Women’s Arts Week to celebrate National Women’s Day.

The programme for next two weeks also strongly focus on youth arts with two schools festivals, children’s theatre, comedy, dance and a symphony concert.
 

Symphony Concert - 4 August 2011 (± 2 hrs)

The Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Nicholas Claybury, presents a musical treat consisting of San Gloria by Pieter Louis van Dijk, Chants d’Auvergne by Canteloube and Symphony No 8 by Dvořák, and with Pretty Yende as soloist. Tickets range from R130 to R180 at the Theatre.

For Generations – 4 to 6 August 2011 (± 1,25 hrs)

In this intimate one-man show, Kurt Egelhof shares, through his exquisite dramatic story telling, the universal story of a family's evolution through generations. A hilarious, touching, joyous celebration of defeat and victory, pain and joy against the backdrop of South Africa’s expansion over the past sixty years. Tickets cost R60 at the Arena.
 

Early Detection Saves Lives - 4 to 6 August 2011

Pinkdrive presents 30-minute educational sessions on cancer awareness. This organisation is fast becoming one of South Africa’s best-loved community initiatives. It is an indispensable, tangible breast cancer Public Benefit Organisation (PBO) powering a mobile mammography and an educational unit throughout South Africa. Free in the Theatre Foyer.
 

Funny Kaap - 4 to 6 August 2011 (± 1,25 hrs)

A flamboyant show, Funny Kaap depicts in a light hearted fashion not to take away from being woman, but to joyfully by means of excruciatingly funny comical song and dialogue celebrate with women. A group of top Cape Town artists like Emo Adams, Take Note, Shimmy Isaacs, Sarah Theron, Soli Philander and others, with Dowwe Dolla as mistress of ceremonies Funny Kaap promises to take you on a wild rollercoaster ride. Tickets cost R120 at the Theatre.
 

WHEAT Trust Awards – 5 August 2011 (± 3 hrs)

The Women’s Hope Education and Training Trust (WHEAT) supports women in seeking local solutions to local problems. It invests in education, training and capacity building to foster women’s leadership and to enable dialogue. To achieve this, the organisation promotes a culture of giving. It also supports human rights for women and feminism. Philanthropists and recipients will be honoured at this award ceremony that illustrates the positive results of uniting women in development.
 

Banyana Republic – 5 and 6 August 2011 (± 1,25 hrs)

Specially compiled for the Women’s Arts Week, Banyana Republic will feature a selection of woman characters from the award-winning Bafana Republic franchise created by Artscape resident playwright Mike van Graan. It will comprise a range of characters from all three editions that celebrate women, and yet provoke and entertain the audience. Tickets cost R60 at the Arena.
 

Girl Talk Skills – 6 August 2011 (± 4hrs)

A workshop that provides a safe place to explore sound and responsible answers to questions about sex, drugs, peer pressure and socio-economic challenges. By invitation at the Opera Bar.
 

Plus-Minus-Equal - Women and Justice in 2011 - 6 August (± 2,5 hrs)

Journalist and community activist, Elna Boesak, places gender justice and other crucial issues on the national agenda when she facilitates a public conversation. She will lead a discussion in which a diverse group of South Africans will state their views and the audience will engage role players and stakeholders on the topic of women’s empowerment.
 

Nando’s Comedy Festival – 9 to 15 August 2011 (± 2 hrs)

No under 16-year-olds

Celebrating its 15th anniversary this year, the Nando’s Cape Town Comedy Festival is the biggest comedy festival on the African continent. Featuring the likes of Pablo Francisco, the festival will once again bring seven of the hottest international and local comedy acts together on one stage – this year, for the first time, at the Artscape Opera House. Tickets range from R150 to R200.

Schools Arts Festival – 10 to 26 August 2011 (± 2 hrs)

The 12th annual Artscape Schools Arts Festival is packed with excitement and energy. This celebration of arts and culture unites learners, educators, parents and friends from different backgrounds. The festival culminates in an exciting gala on 26 August, Tickets cost R40 at the Theatre.

Kipper and the Magic Carpet – 10 August to2 September 2011(± 1 hr)

Kipper’s back to save the day! On a magic carpet, he and Biff take a ride to the Middle East. Here they encounter dubious characters that not only want to steal the carpet and the magic key, but they nearly become hard labour slaves. They are in serious trouble and need all the help they can get to save Princess Zana from her unscrupulous uncle. Tickets cost R50 at the Theatre.

Butlers and Blackmail - 11 to 13 August 2011 (± 1,25 hrs)

The butler is black, er… BACK! The fourth instalment of Justin Wilkinson’s ever-popular murder-mystery comedy sees its first "BEE"-compliant butler. In this hilarious presentation, the butler acts as the host in a show where the audience decides at specific points during the performance what should happen next. Tickets range from R59 to R69 at the Arena.
