André Rieu - King of Waltz for the Dome in 2012Hunta Live03/23/2011 17:40:37
The biggest classical artist in the world, André Rieu, will be returning to South Africa in August next year for a third consecutive year. The maestro and his Johann Strauss Orchestra will bring their special brand of music to Johannesburg fans’ doorstep with their concerts at the largest venue in Africa – the Coca-Cola Dome. Over 90 000 South African fans have attended his sold-out tours over the past two years and still there is no slowing down for the King of Waltz. The Coca-Cola Dome in Johannesburg is one of the largest, most innovative domed structures of the modern world and with its massive capacity of 13 000, it will be the biggest venue Rieu has ever played in South Africa – and big is something André Rieu does well. Universal Music handed over a Platinum award to Rieu during his Sun City concerts for “My African Dream” which has already sold in excess of 25 000 units in South Africa. “The André Rieu catalogue has sold over 400 000 units in South Africa and he has been our top selling DVD artist for the past 5 years, generating 10 platinum and 14 Gold Awards. His most current album “Roses of the South”, which was only released a few weeks ago, is fast approaching Gold status and looks set to be one of his biggest sellers ever. It is indeed a great honour to work with such a creative and prolific artist such as André Rieu and experience the warmth and love the South African fans show at these sell-out shows”, says Marketing Director for Universal Records, Steve Harris. The change of venue will delight many Johannesburg and Pretoria fans as The Coca-Cola Dome’s capacity and location will make the concerts much more accessible for a larger segment of fans. It is not just in South Africa that the chart-topping Dutch violinist and conductor is making waves. Known as the King of Waltz, André performs in large sold-out venues all over the world, and was the Number One Selling male performer of 2009. His album “Forever Vienna” is currently sitting in the Top 10 UK Album Chart –something unheard of for a recording of traditional waltzes. He has sold more than 30 million albums globally, and has broken all classical concert records, packing stadiums and arenas with over 700,000 adoring fans each year. André Rieu even performed for the Britain’s Queen in 2009 and for the Dutch Queen in 2010, an honour for any artist! “André Rieu is one of the entertainment world’s truly unique performers and we are constantly amazed at the local attraction this extraordinary artist is generating. We are already in discussion with a number of South Africa's top artists to collaborate in the 2012 tour, audiences who may have seen a previous tour will have good reason to book again”, says Sam Hendrikse, CEO of Hunta Live. Following on from the highly successful partnership between DStv and Hunta Live during the previous tours, DStv will once again be the proud presenting partner to this prestigious event in 2012. The natural fit of the André Rieu brand has been confirmed with the exceptional high viewership across the bouquet of channels, especially with the screening of André Rieu “specials” over the festive period. Pre-sales for Gold Card Members open tomorrow (Thursday, 24 March 2011) at noon for 24 hours before the General Public Sales open on Friday, 25 March 2011 at noon. Early booking is advised.
