Cape Town City Ballet presents CarmenPercy Tucker09/20/2010 08:51:48
The Cape Town City Ballet (CTCB) will present Veronica Paeper's acclaimed three-act ballet Carmen at the Artscape Theatre from 14 October - 7 November, 2010. An alternating cast of three couples will perform the roles of the fiery gypsy, Carmen, and her jealous lover, Don Jose, in Veronica Paeper's dramatic and visually exciting balletic version of Bizet's beloved opera. Prima Ballerina Megan Swart will be partnered by the powerful Xola Putye, who will also dance with Kim Vieira, while Robin Van Wyk dances the role of the dashing toreador Escamillio. The other leading couple will be Laura Bosenberg and Thomas Thorne, who were lauded for their interpretations at the recent National Arts Festival in Grahamstown. From the opening, this ballet is infused with the traditions and mysteries of Spain and the belief in the power of fate. From the midst of the group emerge one man and one woman whom fate binds together, sealing their destiny with a flower. A ballet not to be missed! The Cape Town City Ballet took this production of Carmen to the Grahamstown Festival earlier this year, where they danced to sold-out audiences and standing ovations. Principal dancers from the Cape Town City Ballet, Robin Van Wyk, Thomas Thorne and Laura Bosenberg have recently returned from a successful collaboration of this production of Carmen with the South African Ballet Theatre. "George Bizet's unmistakable Carmen evokes images of Spain, bull-fighting and flamencos, toreadors and red-hot passion and Veronica Paeper's choreography aims to visually replicate those aural imaginings. As a ballet and as a story, Carmen is much more raw than many of the classics and Paeper does not polish the edges to make it pretty. Carmen is a brawling seductress with a violent streak and a foul mouth; she is, of course, also very beautiful and inspires burning passion in men." Annette Bayne - The Citizen CARMEN Veronica Paeper's dramatic and visually exciting balletic version of Bizet's beloved opera.
