Presidential Uys queens head to the LyricBUZ Publicity07/15/2010 12:43:08
Forget the bed-hopping ladies of Wisteria Lane - they've got nothing on our very own Desperate First Ladies, who are being corralled by Pieter-Dirk Uys at the Lyric Theatre this August. For three nights only - 7, 8 and 9 August 2010 - at Gold Reef City Casino's grand Lyric Theatre, Tannie Evita Bezuidenhout, South Africa's most famous (and glamorous) white woman, will regale audiences in all her glittering splendour. Just in time for Women's Day, she'll be heading up a chorus line of fabulous fillies, floozies and flossies from South Africa and abroad in this brand-new show. The Desperate First Ladies in question aren't just the many wives of South Africa's current president, but also a long list of iconic women such as Hillary Clinton, Grace Mugabe and Winnie Madikizela-Mandela. The selection of hilarious, satirical sketches in the show will see Uys also portraying Jewish-African princess Nowell Fine, Cape Malay firebrand Mrs Petersen, Bergie Wilhelmina Opklim, and Evita's outspoken sister Bambi Kellermann. Now, Tannie Evita flatly refuses to be seen with her sister. "No, skatties, we will never be in the same place at the same time," she confirms. To understand this in context, you have to realise that Bambi is not desperate; she's dangerous! A former stripper in Germany, now widow of a Nazi general, Bambi is on a mission to unionise sex workers and focus on improving the female condom. "It will save millions of lives," she says. "And if we have a constitution that protects us all, why are sex workers seen as criminals? They're just earning a living. Unionise them, give them health care and let them pay tax!" The ghost of PW Botha, recently spotted wandering around his Wilderness house, will also make a spooky appearance during Desperate First Ladies. There will be a special guest at every performance, and Tannie will also autograph personal copies of her best-selling cookery book Evita's Kossie Sikelela after each show. Performances take place at 8.30pm on the 7 and 8 and at 3:00pm on the 9 August 2010. Tickets are priced at R150. If you're looking for a raucously entertaining evening out with South Africa's master of socio-political satire, book now for Desperate First Ladies through Computicket, or at the Lyric Theatre box-office on 011 248 5000. After the Women's Day long weekend at the Lyric Theatre, Bambi Kellermann will open her own show, "F.A.K. Songs...." and Other Struggle Anthems, at the new Fugard Theatre in Cape Town on 1 September. She will be accompanied by her Bokkie Band, under the musical direction of Godfrey Johnson.
