Braamfontein Spruit Trust group walks

Every month this year you can join a walk in one of Gauteng's green spaces organised by the Braamfontein Spruit Trust.

Guided Walks/Activities

- Please note starting times vary according to the seasons and the nature of the walk/event.
- Whenever possible, information will be supplied during the walks, on points of special interest.
- What to wear: Hat, comfortable shoes and clothing. Bring: Liquids, light snack and walking stick.
- Please remember that it is not advisable to bring cameras, jewellery, cell phones etc.
- Please diarise dates and times.

THE WALKS ARE NOT LED BY A QUALIFIED TOUR GUIDE

The Delta Users Committee conduct walks around Delta Park on the third Sunday of every month. They leave from Trefoil Park - the Girl Guide Centre - at 08.00 and return + 2 hours later. Children and dogs are most welcome. There is no charge for this walk. For details contact Clive Fletcher at 082 688 1879.


SUNDAY APRIL 18 2010

Venue: MORELETA KLOOF, PRETORIA

Directions: Take N1 marked to Polokwane. Take Rigel/Delmas turn off. Coming off Highway, then turn right into Delmas Road. At 2nd set of robots, turn left into Hans Strydom. First set of robots turn right into Rubenstein Drive. Third road to the left is Helios Street. Take this turning and take this road all the way along, following green railings of Moreleta Reserve. Entrance is on the left. Meet in first car park on the right hand side just after you enter the Reserve. There are several marked unguided walks and a lot of game. The area is most attractive with a river running through. No dogs.

Picnic and Toilet facilities: Toilets Yes. Take picnic - there are benches and tables. (Rademeyers Farm Restaurant is on site which offers a Sunday buffet at R95 per head).

SUNDAY MAY 23 2010

Venue: SANDSPRUIT WALK

Walk commences at 08.00 sharp. Adults and teenagers welcome and litter pick-up is encouraged. Bring rubber gloves. Walk approximately 2½-hours along the river. The walk commences with a brief walk through part of Morningside to get to the river. We will be walking through Ernest Ullman Park to Katherine Street. It is interesting to see on this route what happens when residents do not get involved, as opposed to when the residents do on the other route!

Directions: North on Rivonia Rd towards Morningside. Turn right in Kelvin Drive. Meet at No: 126 Kelvin Drive. Contact: Judith or Rick 011 802 2685. Will anyone who intends doing this walk please phone Judith or Rick in advance as they would like to know how many walkers are coming.

Picnic and Toilet facilities: Drive to Ernest Ullman Park after the walk for picnic and where there are toilet facilities. Well behaved dogs welcome.

Approximate Admission Fee: A donation would be appreciated for Rick and Judith to erect a locked gate to enable access to the northern side of the Spruit from the bottom of their property.


SUNDAY JUNE 27 2010

Venue: KENSINGTON/BELGRAVIA HISTORICAL WALK

Duncan Guy will lead us on this walk. We go up to Langerman Kop, where the Foster Gang were caught, onto Jeppe Boys for a talk about this historical school and then to St James's in Marshall Street which is now a School of Philosophy.

Directions: Meet at Darras Centre, Corner Kitchener & Juno Street, Kensington outside Europa Coffee Shop next to Pick & Pay.

Picnic and Toilet facilities: No facilities en route. After the walk we will meet for coffee and snacks at Darras Centre. Dogs welcome on walk but not allowed into Shopping Centre.

Admission Fee: Donations of R10 per head.

 

SUNDAY JULY 18 2010

Venue: RIETVLEI NATURE RESERVE, near IRENE

Directions: Coming from south or east take R21 past O.R.Tambo airport, marked to Pretoria. Take Irene/Nellmapius Drive turn-off. Turn right into Nellmapius Drive. Second robots turn right into Goede Hope Avenue. There is a brown tourism sign directing you to Rietvlei Nature Reserve. (Do not go straight ahead to Rietvlei Dam which is also marked.) Coming from northern suburbs, go through Irene, past Cornwall Hill and continue straight into Nellmapius Drive. You will see the brown tourism sign directing you to Rietvlei Nature Reserve and turn right into Goede Hope Avenue. The entrance to the Nature Reserve is along this road on the left hand side. The guard will let you through the gate. Park at the Offices.

Rietvlei Nature Reserve covers an area of 3800 hectares, with game, a vast selection of indigenous trees and grasses and large dam. The Rietvlei Dam provides Pretoria with 15% of its water requirements. The wetlands on the reserve is regarded as a rare asset. We will be taken on approximately a 6km walk with a Conservation Guide from Rietvlei Reserve who will return us to the car park and we will then drive back into the reserve for a bring & braai. (We will supply firewood and charcoal).

Admission Fee: R50 per person as this is a Guided Walk. The Guide will take a minimum of 10 people on this walk.

SUNDAY AUGUST 22 2010

Venue: THE WILDS, HOUGHTON

Directions: Off Houghton Drive. Park and meet at St John's School lower car parking in St Patricks Road.

We will join TJ for this walk. The Wilds offers panoramic views of Johannesburg and surrounding suburbs. The fauna and flora is plentiful and the whole area has been upgraded and revamped for the public to enjoy.

Picnic and Toilet facilities: Yes. Carry "snack pack & juice" for tea break on West Side of The Wilds during walk. Dogs on leads only.

Approximate Admission Fee: Donation appreciated to go towards the grounds staff at The Wilds for Christmas.

 

SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 19 2010

Venue: DELTA PARK WALK FOLLOWED BY AGM

Directions: Proceed north along Barry Hertzog/Rustenburg Road/1st Avenue Linden. Turn east at the traffic lights at the Engen Garage, corner 1st Avenue Linden and Road No: 3 Victory Park. Signpost to Delta Environment Centre. Continue to the gate at the T Junction at Road No: 5. Turn right and then left to the Girl Guide Headquarters at the end of the road. Meet at the car park.

We will join Clive Fletcher and the Delta Park walkers on a scenic walk along the Braamfontein Spruit, followed by the AGM in the Guide Hall at Trefoil Park 10.00am for 10.15am.

SUPPORT THE GIRL GUIDES FUNDRAISING - Tea/Coffee and Muffins available at nominal cost.

Venue: EMMARENTIA BOTANICAL GARDENS - SPECIAL WALK FOR THE BLIND AND DISABLED

Directions: From Beyers Naude turn right into Thomas Bowler into the first entrance right - not the Floreum car park. Meet in car park. We will go to the Rose Gardens and on to the Sensory Gardens and picnic afterwards.

Val Kleyn has requested that we hold this walk and that as many members as possible assist the blind and disabled folk to enjoy a day out.

Picnic and Toilet facilities: Yes. Please could we have donations of food and drink so that we can share our picnic with everybody. No dogs.

SUNDAY NOVEMBER 14 2010

Venue: MELVILLE KOPPIES - CENTRAL

Directions: Meet in Car Park of Marks Park, off Judith Road, Emmarentia, opposite to entrance to Melville Koppies, and explore this pristine indigenous nature reserve with a guide.

SUNDAY DECEMBER 5 2010

Venue: ZOO LAKE WALK (Followed by lunch at the Bowling Club)

Optional walk around Zoo Lake and the rest of this well kept park and an interesting look at Artists Under the Sun, followed by our year end luncheon at the Bowling Club at 12noon. (Please confirm with Margaret at the November walk if you are attending the lunch so she can pre- book).
Directions: Turn off Jan Smuts, opposite Johannesburg Zoo, going towards Parkview. Meet in the car park of Zoo Lake Bowling Club.
