Siyabonga Mposula: A dance work that questions who we are, what we will become and the influences determining these questions.

An inspiration from the different paths in human nature, a conception that looks at points of change, moments of peculiarity and turning points within oneself. This is Indlela, choreographed by dancer and teacher, Luyanda Sidiya.

Sidiya runs the Luthando Arts Academy in Sebokeng, where he offers classes in African, Contemporary, Afro fusion and Edudance. He has performed at the FNB Dance Umbrella since 2002 and has a diploma in performing Arts from Moving Into Dance Mophatong. Indlela is his second self - choreographed work to première at the Dance Umbrella.

The different paths in which human beings fit into place towards finding their inner selves inspire Sidiya's choreography. It is a conception that looks at points of transformation in people's lives. It also depicts moments of idiosyncrasy and struggles within personal lives. This dance work is a way of finding out where we are, our influences in life, questions about our background and determining if we should place our focus towards the future, or if we are living the future.

Indlela, translated as a path in Zulu, is an expression of the difficulty most South African dancers face as they tell the stories that matter in their lives, in evocative narrative about events that make a human life. Sidiya uses emotions derived from the performer's stories as the source of his choreography. He lets the dancers find themselves, therefore finding the meaning of their part within the dance work.

The dance work has a clear message through the usage of sharp, meticulous and edifying composition, as it is easy to comprehend the dancer's moves. This is seen through Itumeleng Hlapane's opening solo as he appears to be screaming and hurting, which explains his pain. The use of hand movements also gives a clear description of the path he seeks to find and his attempt towards finding it. As the dancers connect with their emotions, the dance work offloads life's baggage on the studio floor. These loads include fear, choices, relationships, confusion, pain and other life issues. Indlela is a true expression of contemporary dance as it highlights a story that has a relation to every individual.

"My work is inspired by people. I wanted to tell a story about myself, but I thought how about I tell stories about all of us," says Sidiya as he points at his diverse cast. More than the sharing of testimonies and histories, Indlela is a discourse about sacred similarity of life's journey and circumstances that lead to reactions of change by different individuals.
