Reed Dance on Dockyard stage Durban-based Mdubane Arts Company is performing the traditional Zulu Reed Dance at the Dockyard Theatre on Easter weekend. The Reed Dance is a Zulu tradition which dates beck to ancestral times undertaken by virgin maidens who gather reeds for the Royal monarch symbolizing their purity. Although this dance, which encompasses a variety of well choreographed routines passed from generation to generation, is well-know throughout the Zulu nation it is unknown to other nations. Durban-based Mdubane Arts Company has decided to rectify the matter and has created a production complete with English explanation. Not only does it explain the reed dance itself but also the contentious issue of virginity testing (ukhlolwa in Zulu). Matinee performances of `Umhlanga - The Reed Dance` will be performed at the Dockyard Theatre at the Point Waterfront on Saturday 15 April, Sunday 16 April and Monday 17 April at 2pm. Tickets are R80pp. An A-la-carte menu will be available as well as a cash bar. This is a perfect opportunity for both locals and visitors to Durban to gain insight into Zulu tradition.
